Trade Update

04/15/2020 - Manuel Martinez

  1. The guidelines from FEMA for the waiver to Mexico and Canada on exports of personal protective equipment has still not been released. Small shipments under $2,500 can be exported anywhere in the world. At this time exports to Mexico are exempt, however final clarification from FEMA is still pending.
  2. China 301 Import Duties may be waived on imported items that support the COVID-19 challenge. If you have not requested an exemption you can still do so by June 30 and it may be retroactive to 2018.
  3. Both Mexico and Canada have notified the United States that they are ready to implement the USMCA as soon as July 1. As soon as the United States confirms the agreement becomes effective within 60 days. We suspect that the United States may wait till May, which means we might have a start date of August 1.
  4. In-bond shipments to Mexico may be eligible for an extended stay in the United States (without any requirement to pay duties and with no penalties) under Contingent General Order status for up to 180 days.
